What do you love about vintage?
The beauty...
The quality...
The uniqueness of a piece.
Love, love, love the hunt, finding the gem amongst the junk. It could be considered my drug. My pulse quickens when I come across a really special piece of vintage. It may sound crazy...but, I suspect many vintage collectors and dealers experience this same symptom.
The research aspect also appeals to me. Dating an item, researching the label or signatures of a piece. Particularly if it's something from decades ago.
I have an active imagination. I often like to visualize in my mind what was the lifestyle of the original owner. Was this little 70's jersey dress twirling around the dance floor of Studio 54 in a former life? Maybe...
What is the best item you have ever come across when you have been vintage/thrift shopping?
A fabulous mod 60s skirt by Leonard. This is a great example of how research and educating yourself can help train you to spot a desirable piece you might otherwise pass up.
Just day's prior to finding this skirt, I was on the computer looking at items that had sold for high dollar amounts and came across Leonard (a designer and protégé of Pucci). I studied the labels and signatures on his items and amazingly, three days later I'm at my favorite thrift shop and hanging right in front of me is the afore mentioned Mod 60's Leonard skirt. I thought I had died and gone to vintage heaven. It sold for $175.00.
Do you have a style or method you use when vintage/thrift shopping?
Since I'm sourcing for several shops in addition to Vignette Vintage, I'm on the lookout for anything that catches my eye. From 40's and 50's to 60's, 70's, and 80's. From simple pieces all the way up to high end designer items as well as home decor.
I have several thrifts I visit weekly and on occasion I hit ones out of my area when I'm visiting a friend or family member. My dream is to one day plan a summer road trip and work my way across the country visiting small towns, hunting the thrifts, eating great food and wine and shooting photos along the way.
Is there one tip you could share that might help someone who is new to vintage/thrift shopping?
Quality - I learned early that quality is very important. I don't care how fabulous an item is, if it has a hole or stains, I pass it up...because no one will buy it.
If you are new to thrift shopping, I can tell you, it's just amazing what you can find, both in contemporary designer apparel and unique vintage items to incorporate into your wardrobe and to beautify your home.

I'm totally going to agree with you on my pulse speeding up when I think I've found a great steal! It's the uniqueness of a piece and the fact that it still has style that appeals to me! It's the best feeling ever!
