This week's Behind the Design feautres the very talented Heather from Perch Papiers.
Where does your inspiration come from?
Vintage photos, color swatches, flowers, long hikes, windy days, thrift stores.
Do you have a spot you like to go that helps you feel creative?
I tend to feel most creative late at night...it doesn't so much matter where I am...but what I've done that day.
Where do you do most of your work?
My living room floor :) I have tried to sit at a desk, a table, the counter...but I will never be a desk job sort of person!
I wanted a name that incorporated nature and paper but that was also simple and light...my roommate was 'perched' on the top ledge of our couch one afternoon gazing out the window as I was struggling with what to name my business...and voile! It hit me! And that was that!
Your favorite thing to make?
Any thing incpororating custom design with handwriting and illustrations.
What is your all time favorite design from past or current collections?
I am coming out (this week!) with a brand new line of cut paper! Prints, candles, and lights...I am LOVING them!
You couldn't run your business without ________?
Chocolate, an understanding roommate, and lots of paper!
What advice do you wish someone had given you when you first started your business?
The importance of really learning how to price your items...including everything from paper, envelopes, etsy fees, paypal fees, prodction time, envelopes, ink, postal fees, etc., etc....I underpriced so many items my first year of business and in doing so I ended up paying myself $2 an hour! Now I make sure I know exactly what I'm spending before pricing items!
Coffee of tea?
I'm trying to give up caffiene, so sad! I heart double shot lattes!
Favorite magazine/blog/daily read?
Once Wed, Poppytalk, Design*Sponge
If you could follow one person around for a day, who would it be?
I know that technically this is not a person, but I would follow a bird around everywhere they went. I'd love to see life through their eyes, to see nature in a whole new light. To not feel the calmness of only doing one thing at each moment.
Do you have any hobbies or creative outlets other than your work?
Drawing with chalk on the sidewalk on a sunny afternoon, hiking, climbing, naps in the grass.
If you could travel anywhere in the world, money and time being no object, where would you go and why?
I would move to South Africa to help orphaned children...and when I got too old, I would head to New Zealand and spend my days drinking tea and talking to my neighbors.
If you had to spend a year on a deserted island, what 5 things would you take with you?
Sketch book
My circus pajamas
Chocolate
Rope, so I could make some sweet rope sandals!
And a dog I would name Gus :)
