Behind the Design - Joom

Good morning everyone.  I hope you all had a wonderful weekend!  We got hit with a cold snap and it was wonderful, it's really starting to feel like autumn here!

This week's Behind the Design features Joom Klangsin, creator of beautiful pillows and accessories for the home.

Where does your inspiration come from?
I get my inspiration from the world around me.  I am especially interested in nature, music, art, and architecture. The idea of using a bird and flower came to me one day while I was sitting on my patio taking care of my garden.  A hummingbird came to feed on a fuchsia plant and I closed my eyes and saw the silhouette of the bird and the flower. That image has been a main part of my designs ever since.

Do you have a spot you like to go that helps you feel creative?
I like to work right in front of my computer.  I spend a lot of time browsing on the internet.

Where do you do most of your work?
I live in an apartment.  I work on my dining table most of the time.

What is your favorite thing to make?
There are so many things that I love to make.  My favorite thing is making illustrations.  I enjoy working on color combinations.

What is your all time favorite design from past or current collections?
My all time favorite design is the bird on the cherry blossom design.  It's my first design that I put on my pillows.  The design is still doing well in my Etsy shop.

You couldn't run your business without ________?
My inspirations.

What advice do you wish someone had given you when you first started your business?
I wasn't really good at keeping track of my spending and had a hard time balancing my budget at the very beginning.  I wish somebody would have given me advice on that.

Coffee or tea?
I'm a tea person.

Favorite magazine/blog/daily read?
My favorite magazine is Dwell and my favorite websites are Apartment Therapy, Notcot, Behance, and Ffffound.

If you could follow one person around for a day, who would it be?
I'd love to follow Lotta Jansdotter.  She is the one who makes me want to create my collections.

Do you have hobbies or creative outlets other than your work?
I do painting sometimes.  I also love baking and gardening.

Thank you Joom for participating in this week's Behind the Design.
